“Powering Homes, Empowering People” Roadmap in Australia

Australia Pushes for "Powering Homes, Empowering People" Roadmap

In June 2024, the Clean Energy Council (CEC) of Australia unveiled the "Powering Homes, Empowering People" Roadmap, aimed at accelerating the adoption of Consumer Energy Resources (CER) across the nation. CER refers to products and services like solar panels, inverters, batteries, etc that help generate or manage energy use in homes and businesses, building on Australia’s world-leading position in rooftop solar uptake.

Australia’s Impressive Solar System Uptake

Australia has experienced remarkable growth in rooftop solar installations. To date, more than 3.8 million small-scale solar systems (with capacities under 100 kW) have been installed, contributing a total output capacity exceeding 23 gigawatts. This rapid adoption has led to challenges, as large amounts of power exported back to the grid can depress daytime wholesale electricity prices into negative territory, causing operational difficulties for grid operators.

Solar Battery Adoption: A Key to Stabilising Electricity Supply and Demand

To address these challenges, the new "Powering Homes, Empowering People" Roadmap includes solar battery subsidies designed to stabilise electricity prices in Australia. Surplus solar energy generated by solar panels is stored in batteries instead of being sent back to the grid, thereby reducing power exports that can negatively impact electricity prices. This stored energy can also be utilised during peak demand periods, aligning solar panels and inverter installations with both net-zero emission goals and sustainable grid operation.

It’s Not Just About Solar Batteries

The roadmap recommends additional policies and programs for consideration by the Federal Government, including:

-        A $100 million Empowering Communities Fund to oversee the delivery of education and training programs on electrification and energy efficiency.

-        Opportunities for renters and social housing residents to participate in consumer energy resources.

-        A review of household and business energy futures and pathways toward electrification.
